Recently, I designed a brochure for Social Impact Research Center and the Heartland Alliance (see October 7, below). They've asked me to help by posting a message about their Hope for a Hurting World gift program, and I'm only too happy to do so:
This year was hard for many of the people we work with. Parents lost jobs, families lost homes, many fell into poverty, all while funds for services in city and state budgets were reduced and sometimes completely eliminated. But at Heartland Alliance, budget cuts haven’t stopped our work, we’re still providing help to people who need a home, or a doctor, or protection from harm.
People can buy gifts for each other from our Hope for a Hurting World gift catalog, and all of the proceeds go to providing services for the people in our community who need our help right now.
You can check out the gift catalog online here. There are great gifts, including things like winter outerwear for a child, health care for a homeless person, or job skills training for parents. I’m really proud of the work Heartland Alliance does, and I hope others can be a part of giving back at the holidays.

Since early in 2008, I have been privileged to be the designer of TerraFirma, the newly relaunched, quarterly publication of the Chicago-based REALTORS Land Institute.
In July, 2009, the ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership announced that TerraFirma had won its prestigious Gold Circle Award:
The REALTORS Land Institute’s Terra Firma newsletter has been honored with a 2009 Gold Circle Award from ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership.
The Gold Circle honors “Excellence and Innovation in Association Communications” in a number of categories, including annual reports, magazines, newsletters, blogs, podcasts, and other communications vehicles. RLI is the only REALTOR organization recognized with a Gold Circle Award for 2009.
“Communications is a critical function for any association because it is the primary means for sharing information internally with staff and members as well as with external audiences,” said ASAE & The Center President and CEO John H. Graham IV, CAE.
“Winners of the Gold Circle Award competition have taken their projects to the next level, integrating the fundamentals of effective communications with elements of creativity, design, technology, innovation and metrics to measure effectiveness of their tactics. I congratulate each winner for their superior programs.”

Promotional brochure
Social Impact Research Center
Pro bono for Taproot Foundation
This was my first volunteer project for the Taproot Foundation. I worked with a team to produce a four-color, 8-page, 9-inch square brochure. The cover and inside cover are pictured above. The Taproot grant recipient was the Social Impact Research Center (SIRC), which is part of the Chicago-based Heartland Alliance. SIRC deals in statistics and data, and their primary goal with this piece was to solicit new business for their small but very vital and busy organization.
A few words from the client on the finished product:
“It's beautiful! ... Many, many thanks, Dave, for your amazing quality work and equally amazing patience with this process.”
I created several concepts during the course of the project. A few of these are shown below:
