Visit Benny! Jan. 15, 2007: I've decided to relocate This Day In History to Benny's page. Bella's Scratching Post will always live on, however. Nov. 4, 2006: The photo at left shows Bella's commemorative brick on the walkway at the humane society Bella was adopted from. Coincidentally, it was installed on the exact anniversary of Bella's passing. Beside that it took almost a full year to get the brick, the shelter unfortunately got Bella's "MRROW-WOW" wrong. Oct. 28, 2006: One of the premiere racers on The Amanxing Races was Bella, along with her partner, Douglas. Now, Douglas is teaming up with Benny and Zen, for The Amanxing Race 4: Agricultural Shock! Visit Benny for more de-tails! Bella passed away on Oct. 28th, 2005. She was a sweet and wonderful companion. I miss her very much. -Dave Bella was a brown, striped Manx cat who lived near downtown Chicago, Illinois with Dave, her human companion (and graphic artist). Dave found Bella at the West Suburban Humane Society in Downers Grove in 1993. Bella, at the time named Bobbi, was alone in a cage, albeit a very nice cage, in a room filled with other cages and other hopeful cats. She'd been there off-and-on (staying with a foster parent for awhile) about six months. Bella was very shy, and often skittish around strangers. She had a quiet, passive and timid disposition, claws front and back, a roundish face and, of course, no tail, the main characteristic of the Manx breed of cat. Bella enjoyed sleeping - above all else - with perhaps the exception of a late night dinner of Fancy Feast Chopped Grill cat food. However, her main menu consisted of Science Diet Sensitive Skin, Nature's Choice or Iams, and Purina Cat Chow. Another favorite time of the day was "soccer practice". Her soccer "ball" was a small, fluffy ball toy, rolled into the "soccer net" (a cardboard box with two openings cut-in). Bella did her best to block the shot. If she missed, she would fish-out the ball, sometimes tossing it right back to her "opponent" (Dave). Bella's competitive nature was evident during the 2000 election campaign, when she made an unprecedented "run" for the Presidency of the United States. Douglas, Bella's longtime friend and fellow Chicago cat, was her vice-presidential running mate. Despite strong support from the Manx community, the feline duo's bid was unsuccessful. They declined many offers to be on the Manx Party ticket in 2004. In early 2005, Bella's high blood pressure caused a rupturing and temporary blackening in one of Bella's eyes. With some help from the vet, Bella began to recover. However, she resisted taking her medication, which her companion did not want to force on her. Her appetite decreased somewhat, but she continued to be as loving and wonderful as she'd always been. On the morning of Oct. 28th, 2005, she passed away suddenly. Bella's Scratching Post Web site debuted several years ago, with such features as BellaLog, Help a Manx, FeLines Literary Box, and This Day in History, along with special events like Bella's Survivor: Isle of Man and The Amanxing Race. Bella's blog - the BellaLog - began in April 2004. Below are all the BellaLog entries through December of 2005. . .

I'm working on a larger and more complete Photo Album. I'm also thinking about helping a Manx myself. Bella would have wanted it that way. Nov 2: Thank you to everyone who has sent their condolences and shared their time and their memories of Bella with me during the past few, difficult days. A special thank you to Becky's Island for Becky's tribute and her (and Douglas') support. Next week, an ultrasound for an abnormal protrusion in her abdominal area. And--whatever else the vets recommend... Bella thanks all her friends - both human and fur-clad - for their cards and kind thoughts. Feb 27: Due to technical difficulties beyond our expertise (mainly, the crash of a four-year-old Macintosh), the Scratching Post has been on an unexpected leave of absence since the first week of February. As with most pet-store bought toys (tho this one was bought at Ikea), it's questionable how well loved it will be. Full test results in a couple of days... But Bella still seems more interested in the Pothos... Apr. 15: This morning, Pet Gold brand Seafood and Calamari - a sort of faux-Fancy Feast brand and, incidentally, one of the most foul-looking canned cat foods on the market - was on Bella's breakfast menu. And, in an unusual gesture for the normally non-demonstrative Bella, she reached out with her paw to tap her human companion on the nose. Apr. 14: Movie-cat trivia: one of the characters in the complex film noir classic The Killers (1946) is named Kitty (played by Ava Gardner). Although there are no signs (yet) of any munching, she has been evaluating the Pothos, Dracaena & others as humans would a salad bar. Apr. 10, 2004: We've begun this journal - or Bella-log - to satisfy the big demand for news about Bella. Well, there isn't much of a demand (sorry, Bella), but just to try and make this page more interesting (admittedly there's nowhere to go but up) and up-to-date. While it's about Bella, the human companion Dave will want to help Bella with such things as joining her in her interest in movies and politics (see the new movie quiz and Cat's Eye View of the World, at right), or whatever else strikes her fancy. We'll see how it goes... |
